Let's Discover
Fuengirola |
 |
|
|
|
The popular town of
Fuengirola lies just 25km south west of
Malaga International Airport and is easily accessible by a short
drive or train ride. It is also close to Marbella and
other attractions on the Costa del Sol (also known as the Costa
del Golf by golfing fans!) It is not difficult to see why it is
one of the most popular destinations on the Costa del Sol.
This buzzing cosmopolitan Mediterranean town is the number
one choice for so many different people. Once a small fishing
village, Fuengirola has become a vibrant metropolis full of
character. Of course most people come for the seven kilometres
of sandy beaches which stretch from Sohail Castle to the west,
all the way to Torreblanca in the east. These beautiful beaches are
packed during July and August. There is good eating and great
night life in Fuengirola too. |

Many prefer to visit this lovely coastal town during
spring and autumn months. Mild and pleasant temperatures, glorious
sunshine, and quieter beaches, restaurants and streets make for a really
enjoyable holiday! You will find people smile just that little
bit easier, shopping and dining are an absolute pleasure, and
you can enjoy all the attractions this city has to offer in
comfort. A word of warning about the restaurants though.
Spain is well behind the rest of Europe in regard to enforcing a
smoking ban and the smaller establishments (most restaurants)
are unlikely to have separate rooms for smokers yet, so you may
find fresh air hard to find while eating. This is a real shame
because the stench of cigarette smoke and unemptied ashtrays
really spoils a meal for most clean living people.

The wonderful sandy beaches are relatively empty out of season with many restaurants, bars and chiringuitos (beach cafes) to choose from. Plenty of good shops
including fashion, food, shoes, etc. and some excellent new
shopping centres have opened up on the border between Fuengirola
and Mijas. |

The main square, Plaza de la Constitución,
(affectionately called 'Church Square by ex-pats) has been
recently re-designed but retains its charm. It looks pretty
especially at Christmas, when it is decorated with very
attractive lights and ornaments. It is also attractive during
the Fuengirola summer feria in October when the whole town takes
part in the annual street celebrations. A walk down the narrow,
pedestrian streets leading off the main square is a voyage of
discovery for the many visitors, who come across some of the
hidden secrets and delightful corners of this friendly,
Andalucian town. Other major attractions in Fuengirola
include:
|
|
|
|
Fuengirola Zoo: Right in the middle of town is an oasis
of calm, a world class zoo with wonderful animals in very
natural enclosures. Appropriate regional sounds play as you walk
around the various areas of the zoo. Of particular interest are
the Sumatra Tigers, the gorillas, and also the Lemur enclosure,
with many of these fascinating creatures from Madagascar. This
enclosure is open with a tour guide at certain times of the day
so just ask when you arrive at the zoo for a close up experience
with magical lemurs. Best time to visit is either early morning
(zoo opens at 10 am), late afternoon or early evening. |

Sohail Castle: On the banks of a river, on a hilltop,
close to the centre of town is the Sohail Castle. Called "Suhayl"
when it was originally built in the 8th eighth century.
This Moorish castle was destroyed in a Viking raid in 858.
It laid abandoned until the 10th century when the Cordoba
leader, Abderramán III, reconstructed the fortress and re-built
the urban centre. It remained under Moorish control until
captured by the Christians in 1487 who let it fall into disuse. Sohail
castle was revived again in the 18th century for the purpose of
combating smugglers. The castle was heavily renovated in the late 20th. It makes
for a pleasant stroll (if a bit uphill), with wonderful sea
views from the top.

Fuengirola Port: Fuengirola port is busy all year
round and has much to offer the visitor. It is a very
fashionable area for outdoor cafes with many excellent bars and
restaurants. The port of Fuengirola consists of two sections:
1. A working fishing port where it is fascinating to watch the
fishermen offloading their catches from the boats. you can also
take a pleasant stroll around the port from this point and look
at the many boats moored in the port, and also magnificent
mountain views.
2. A leisure boat marina, with many attractive yachts and other
boats. In this area are several pubs and restaurants, and also
enjoyable boat trips are on offer, including sailing boats and
glass bottomed boats for viewing the dolphins. |

So come and visit Fuengirola and enjoy our community in the so-called
"off season"! You won't regret it, and will have a wonderful
holiday! |
